This scrapbook contains materials documenting the part of Jeannine Baker, of Grand Isle, Vermont, in the christening of the S.S. Calvin Coolidge in 1942. The S.S. Calvin Coolidge was one of 2,750 Liberty troop ships hurriedly constructed and launched during World War II. 13 year old Jeannine Baker of the Grand Isle Grammar School was elected by her classmates to represent their school at the christening of the ship when it was launched from Portland, Maine, on December 27, 1942. Vermont's school children had voted on the name of the ship and the Grand Isle School had collected the most scrap metal per student of any school in the state in a Vermont Scrap Salvage Contest. Jeannine Baker was accompanied to the christening by her teacher, Miss Helen H. Haher, and two other Vermont schoolchildren, Milton Lund, from the Gallup Mills School of Victory, and Robert Bordeaux, from the Kneeland Flats School of Waterbury. The scrapbook contains clippings, correspondence, photographs, and other materials related to the christening and the scrap contest. A binder copy of the scrapbook, composed of copies made from the original, is also in the collection.
